Few industries in the annals of time have the rich and varied past as does the Persian/Oriental rug market. Hand-made Oriental rugs are a work of art and a journey through time.
The term "Oriental Rug" simply means carpets from the East, and refers to hand-knotted rugs from an area from southeastern Europe to China. The area includes Iran, Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Turkestan and Caucasus. Over time, tribes migrated and intermarried and eventually copied and shared patterns and techniques. While the rugs serve the obvious purpose, they are also fascinating works of art with captivating designs and colors. Some of these carpets are made by the nomadic tribes and some by the the more settled, but each tells a story and shares its own cultural diverstiy.
These works of art, once available only to the privileged few, are now enjoyed in homes the world over. Through the centuries this art of hand crafting rugs has survived the moderization and industrialization that has taken hold the world over.
The rugs vary from the more primative geometric patterns to the Persian floral patterns and to the carved patterns of China. Despite the differences in design, each has its own detail and composition that adds a special charm and history.
The pile in most rugs is wool with a cotton foundation, though silk and cotton are also used. Silk is used in the very finest carpets. Cotton is the preferred foundation because of its stability.
