TOUCHING THE EAGLES

PART TWO

ACROSS NINE STATES IN NINE DAYS

Day Fifteen - August 15, 1986 - Phoenix, Arizona

Nancy Has Car Trouble on the Highway
In the morning I decided to continue my trip to California. I drove to the highway which would take me to San Diego. I noticed a small car stopped on the side of the road which appeared to be in trouble. I noticed a young woman behind the wheel and she had a small boy with her. The car had Idaho licence plates. I stopped to offer help.

Nancy, twenty-one years old, was with her twenty month old son, Nicholas. She told me she was expecting again in three weeks. She has a midwife and will have her delivery by natural childbirth.

Nancy's husband worked as a licensed auto mechanic. I drove her several miles to a telephone so that she could call her husband to come to get her. I waited with her and Nicholas until he arrived.

They had recently moved to Pheonix from Idaho. Nancy told me that they had travelled across Canada on a motorcycle.

I wondered why I was guided to assist Nancy. The main reason, of course, is that I do not like to see people in trouble. I was reminded by the guides that the people I was contacting are or would be involved in holistic approaches to health and well being.

You Are to Golf With Him
Continuing down the highway I noticed a golf course. I needed to use the restroom so I thought this would be a good place to stop. I had no intention of golfing since the temperature was over 100 degrees in Pheonix that day.

I talked for awhile with the golf pro and then decided to play a round of golf before moving on. As I was getting my golf clubs from the car another car pulled in beside me with Oklahoma plates.

"You are to golf with him," I was told by the guides.

He was alone so we joined up to golf together.

Jon was a twenty-four year old master sergeant in the U S Air Force. He was here on leave with his wife Allison and their three children visiting her family.

Jon had taken basic training in Texas to become a tail gunner on the B-52 plane. He has taken water survival and trained in a corner of the Bermuda Triangle off the Florida coast. He had also completed land survival in the mountains in Washington state.

Jon was six feet tall and weighed 192 pounds. He was very friendly and it was certainly pleasurable for me to golf with him. He was planning on attending the 60th family reunion of his family name which would take place soon at Indianola, Nebraska. They were expecting over three hundred people would attend.

After completing our golf game we went into the lounge to enjoy a large coke together and watched the Cleveland Browns football team beat the Miami Dolphins 17 to 10.

I asked the golf pro how hot it was that day.

He replied, "It got up to ten today." meaning 110 degrees.

After leaving the golf course I made several other contacts and found another hotel room for the night.
