Please read ALL of these instructions before beginning. This is a model of the Cavorite Sphere from the motion picture, "The First Men in the Moon." Scale is approximately 1/24, and the model is intended to print at 7.5 inches by 10 inches (190.5mm x 254mm), so it should print correctly on US Letter or A4 size sheets of 90 lb (165 gram per square meter) index card by centering the image on the page, preserving the aspect ratio, and setting the image width to 7.5 inches (190.5 mm). Printing as indicated should yield a finished model approximately six inches (152mm) in diameter. ** You will need to print sixteen (16) copies of page1.gif and one (1) copy of page2.gif ** Assembly is meant to proceed in numerical order as the parts are numbered. Score as indicated in the steps below. Remove the areas marked with a red "X" completely. Use the rendered image on page2.gif for reference when assembling modules. All folds are peak folds (away from the printed side). ** Accurate scoring and folding is essential for proper fit of the modules. ** -- Modules Assembly -- ** It is suggested that you assemble each module face-down on a flat surface to keep it straight, and glue the outside corner tabs last; just tuck them in while you fold the module, and glue them after the inside tabs are glued and set. ** -- Module 1 -- 1. Cut the area marked with a red "X" out of part 1A. Cut the four short lines in the inside corners. Score all solid lines except the four indicated by green stars. Fold the shorter flap of part 1A under into a four-sided box and glue to the tab in the middle of the part. Repeat for the longer flap of part 1A. Repeat for the two other flaps of part 1A, gluing them also to the small tabs on the previous two flaps. 2. Glue part 1B to the uncolored side of part 1A so that the colored area shows through the middle of part 1A. 3. Repeat steps 1 and 2 for sixteen Modules 1. -- Module 2 -- 4. Cut the area marked with a red "X" out of part 2A. Cut the four short lines in the inside corners. Score all solid lines except the four indicated by green stars. Fold the shorter flap of part 2A under into a four-sided box and glue to the tab in the middle of the part. Repeat for the longer flap of part 2A. Repeat for the two other flaps of part 2A, gluing them also to the small tabs on the previous two flaps. 5. Glue part 2B to the uncolored side of part 2A so that the colored area shows through the middle of part 2A. 6. Repeat steps 4 and 5 for sixteen Modules 2. -- Module 3 -- 7. Cut the area marked with a red "X" out of part 3A. Cut the eight short lines in the inside corners. Score all solid lines except the eight indicated by green stars. Starting with the flap with tabs on both sides, and proceeding on both adjacent sides to finish with the flap with no tabs, fold the flaps of part 3A under, one at a time, into four-sided boxes and glue to the tabs in the middle of the part, and to the tabs on the previous flaps. 8. Glue part 3B to the uncolored side of part 3A so that the colored area shows through the middle of part 3A. 9. Repeat steps 7 and 8 for two Modules 3. -- Structure Assembly -- ** Great care should be taken to minimize any gaps between modules during assembly ** 10. Arrange eight Modules 1 in a circle with the longest sides facing outward and the colored sides up. Glue together along the adjacent sides to form an octagonal inward-leaning wall. 11. Glue eight Modules 2 to the top edges of the assembly from step 10. Glue each Module 2 to its adjacent modules also. 12. Glue one Module 3 into the opening created by the eight Modules 2. 13. Repeat steps 10 to 12 for the remaining Modules 1, 2, and 3. It may be easiest to assemble the Modules 1 to the inverted assembly from step 12. -- Details Assembly -- -- Hatch -- 14. Glue together the three parts 3C. Glue the uncolored side of part 3D to the three parts 3C. Glue the uncolored side of this assembly to the center of part 3B of whichever Module 3 you wish to be the top of the finished model. -- Portholes -- 15. Cut the area marked with a red "X" out of two parts 1D. Glue one part 1D onto another to double its thickness. Glue one part 1C onto another to double it's thickness. Glue the parts 1D onto the parts 1C so that the colored side of one part 1C shows through the center of the parts 1D. 16. Repeat step 15 for eight Portholes. 17. Glue Portholes to the centers of eight parts 1B of alternating Modules 1, four above and four below the "equator." -- Bumpers -- 18. Roll part 4A into a cylinder and glue the tab to the inside. 19. Wrap and glue part 4B around the uncolored area of part 4A. 20. Glue parts 4C and 4D back-to-back (uncolored sides together). Glue the uncolored spot on part 4C to the end of part 4A opposite part 4B. 21. Repeat steps 18 to 20 for thirty-two Bumpers. 22. Glue eight Bumpers to alternating intersection corners of Modules 3 to Modules 2 (four top, four bottom). Glue sixteen Bumpers to all intersection corners of Modules 2 to Modules 1 (eight upper, eight lower). Glue eight Bumpers to all intersection corners of Modules 1 to Modules 1 (around "equator"). ** A thicker, sturdier glue may be needed to attach the bumpers. Cyanoacrylate gel is one possibility. **
