Please read ALL of these instructions before beginning. There are assembly options which should be decided before anything is cut. This is a model of a generic modern attack submarine. Scale is undetermined, but the model is intended to print at 7.5 inches by 10 inches (190.5mm x 254mm), so it should print correctly on US Letter or A4 size sheets of 90 lb (165 gram per square meter) index card by centering the image on the page, preserving the aspect ratio, and setting the image width to 7.5 inches (190.5 mm). The main hull section rolls into a cylinder of approximately 1 inch (25 millimeters) diameter and 6 inches (152 millimeters) length. Overall length of the finished model is 10.1 inches (256 millimeters). Assembly is meant to proceed in numerical order as the parts are numbered. Since most transitions are fairly gentle, hull parts probably won't require scoring. Do score the tabs on the sail (part 10), the fins (parts 8-2) in two directions on the dashed lines, and the screw blades (parts 8-3) on the dashed lines. Do not score the sail (part 10) at the dashed lines. -- Main Hull -- 1. Glue connectors 1-2 and 1-3 to the back of part 1, using the lines down the middle of the connectors to align the edges of part 1. Roll this assembly into a cylinder and glue. -- Forward Hull -- 2. Glue connector 2-1 to the back of part 2, using the lines down the middle of the connector to align the edges of part 2. Roll this assembly into a shroud and glue. 3. Glue connector 3-1 to the back of part 3, using the lines down the middle of the connector to align the edges of part 3. Roll this assembly into a shroud and glue. Gently bend the tabs on part 2-1 inward to fit the inside of part 3. Align the seams and glue part 3 in place on part 2-1. 4. Glue connector 4-1 to the back of part 4, using the lines down the middle of the connector to align the edges of part 4. Roll this assembly into a shroud and glue. Gently bend the tabs on part 3-1 inward to fit the inside of part 4. Align the seams and glue part 4 in place on part 3-1. 5. Glue connector 5-1 to the back of part 5, using the line down the middle of the connector to align the edge of part 5. Roll this assembly into a cone and glue. Gently bend the tabs on part 4-1 inward to fit the inside of part 5. Align the seams and glue part 5 in place on part 4-1. 6. Gently bend the tabs at the forward end (connector 1-1) of the main hull inward to fit the inside of part 2. Align the seams and glue part 2 in place on part 1-1. -- Aft Hull -- 7. Glue connector 6-1 to the back of part 6, using the lines down the middle of the connector to align the edges of part 6. Roll this assembly into a shroud and glue. 8. Glue connector 7-1 to the back of part 7, using the lines down the middle of the connector to align the edges of part 7. Roll this assembly into a shroud and glue. Gently bend the tabs on part 6-1 inward to fit the inside of part 7. Align the seams and glue part 7 in place on part 6-1. 9. Glue connector 8-1 to the back of part 8, using the lines down the middle of the connector to align the edges of part 8. Roll this assembly into a shroud and glue. Gently bend the tabs on part 7-1 inward to fit the inside of part 8. Align the seams and glue part 8 in place on part 7-1. 10. Glue connector 9-1 to the back of part 9, using the line down the middle of the connector to align the edge of part 9. Roll this assembly into a cone and glue. Gently bend the tabs on part 8-1 inward to fit the inside of part 9. Align the seams and glue part 9 in place on part 8-1. 11. Gently bend the tabs at the aft end (part 1-2) of the main hull inward to fit the inside of part 6. Align the seams and glue part 6 in place on part 1-2. -- Sail -- Before proceeding, you have options to decide on. Please read the rest of this section completely before you cut anything! Connector 10-1 may be used (12a) or omitted for a cleaner join on the trailing edge of the sail (12b). The bottom of the sail (part 10-3) may be omitted for a cleaner join to the main hull. Likewise the tabs along the bottom of the sail may be omitted. I would recommend dry fitting everything prior to deciding which route to take. Choose the method which most pleases you. 12. Score the tabs on part 10, and score connector 10-1 along the line down the middle. Bend the middle of part 10 around a small-diameter rod such as a toothpick, using the dashed lines to guide you. 12a. Glue connector 10-1 to the back of part 10, using the line down the middle of the connector to align the end of part 10. Bend connector 10-1 away from the printed side until it lays flat against itself. Glue the other end of part 10 to connector 10-1, aligning the ends of part 10 carefully. --OR-- 12b. Omit connector 10-1. Apply a tiny amount of glue to the back side of part 10, just along the edge of one end. Bring the ends together carefully and allow the glue to dry while holding the ends together. The outline of the sail atop the main hull can be used as a reference for the desired shape. 13. Fold the tabs at the top of part 10 inward so that part 10-2 will be flat when attached as the top of the sail. Glue part 10-2 in place. 13a. Fold the tabs at the bottom of part 10 inward. Give part 10-3 a gentle curve along its long axis to conform to the shape of the main hull. Fit and glue part 10-3 to the tabs at the bottom of part 10. --OR-- 13b. Omit part 10-3. Fold the tabs at the bottom of part 10 inward to conform to the shape of the main hull. --OR-- 13c. Omit part 10-3. Cut the tabs off of the bottom of part 10. --OR-- 13d. Cut the tabs off the bottom of part 10. Give part 10-3 a gentle curve along its long axis to conform to the shape of the main hull. Fit and glue part 10-3 onto the main hull where indicated. 14. Glue part 10 to the main hull where indicated, using the profile printed on the hull to help shape the sail. Fillet the join with glue if desired. -- Fins -- 15. Score parts 8-2 where indicated by the dashed lines. Fold the tabs along the scored lines toward the printed side. Double each part 8-2 along the scored line and glue together, keeping the tabs clear. The fold is the leading edge. 15a. Glue one part 8-2 to the aft hull, using the seam for alignment, and placing the trailing edge of the part at the line just forward of the screw. Glue the remaining three parts 8-2 90 degrees apart around the aft hull in a similar manner. The tabs should fill the spaces between the fins. --OR-- 15b. For a cleaner look, cut the tabs off of parts 8-2. Glue parts 8-2 directly to the aft hull as in 15a. Fillet the joins with glue if desired. -- Screw -- 16. Score parts 8-3 along the dashed lines. Note that there is an extra part 8-3 (just in case). Double each part 8-3 along the scored line and glue together. Glue seven parts 8-3 to the aft hull where indicated, using the small lines for guidance. The fold is the leading edge. Each part 8-3 is turned approximately 45 degrees from the center line of the hull. -- Display Stand -- I have provided four stands for your amusement and customization. 17. Score all tabs, and along the two lines on the part with the text. Fold along all tabs away from the printed side. 18. Glue one end part inside each end of the main part, printed sides out. The third "end part" may be used for additional support inside the stand if needed. 19. Gently curve the long rectangular part, printed side in, to fit around the main hull. Glue the unprinted side to the tabs on the base.
